2009-2010 Electronic Newsletter for Third Grade

The third grade students have been working on a variety of projects this year. I would like to share our work with you.

As we work on the Internet, I have taught the students to find the links through a website called delicious. If your children would like to use the websites at home, they should be able to click on the All Tags link on the right side of the screen and navigate to the 3rd-grade link. They may need your help finding a website. I have included notes for each website to help you help them.

As the year progresses, I work on many different projects with the third grade students. You may click here or click on the word Third on the left side of the screen to see my plan for the year.

My programs of choice in the third grade are Kid Pix, Word, and Kidspiration. These allow me to show the students how to use many different tools while we practice concepts being learned in the classroom. In KidPix, we continued learning more ways to use the options in the program to create projects. In Word, we have continued our second grade practice of typing one space between words, pressing return to begin a new paragraph, and using the delete (backspace) key to erase mistakes. We practiced using font colors on a poem called "The Wumpaloons" and then drew what we imagined a Wumpaloon would like like. The images are posted here.

Once the students complete the project for the week, they may use their choice of several educational games. They enjoy A to Zap!, Thinkin' Things 2, JumpStart Kindergarten Advanced, Reading Blaster Ages 5-7, and Math Blaster Ages 5-7. They like using Google Earth to explore our planet.

We have been learning about penguins and our state bird since January. Through the use of Excel, Kidspiration, our Activboard, and KidPix, the third grade is building their knowledge. Here are a few sample drawings of the Eastern Goldfinch and a sample of a Kidspiration chart comparing the penguin and the Eastern Goldfinch in a Venn diagram. Kidspiration allows the students to create charts to organize their thoughts. You can click here to see a slideshow of your child's work. This is a sample from one student. Please click the little cc icon to see the notes the student typed to complement the images they created using PowerPoint, KidPix, and Kidspiration.

The students will be learning about making a selection from many resources on the Internet as they complete research for Mrs. Krako's social studies project on state facts.

The students in 3a used the ActivBoard to create a collaborative Christmas card for an exchange of cards via postal mail with students around the country.

The students in 3b used the tablet PCs in class to create collaborative stories. The presented their final stories to their class via the ActivBoard.

We have been discussing a computer ethics question which focuses on if it is right to change someone's electronic space such as Club Penguin or Webkinz. We used the ActiVote devices to answer questions and discuss the answers.

These are the ideas we discussed. Click on the little cc icon to see my comments about the slides.

There is a link saved to send your name to Mars on a computer chip. We did not do this in class. You may use the link with your child if it is of interest to you. My whole family is sending our names to Mars on the 2011 mission. As a parent, you may be interested in creating your own Delicious account. You can save bookmarks and open them on any computer.
